"Singin' In The Rain" presented by the Granbury Theatre Company

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
play program

The Travelling Toe along with a few other friends traveled to Granbury to attend the Sunday matinee performance of "Singin' In The Rain".  It was on at the historic Granbury Opera House and presented by the Granbury Theatre Company.

The play is based on the 1952 musical comedy movie starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor.  The musical is loaded with fabulous songs and dancing.

The short version of the plot is that Don Lockwood along with Lina Lamont are silent movie picture stars.  But Don accidentally meets Kathy Selden and sparks ignite. The only fly in the ointment is Lina because she wants Don for herself.  Then big news is announced - the "talkies" are in and they have to re-shoot the current silent film production with dialogue and singing and dancing. But Lina has a very high pitched squeaky voice and can not sing a lick. So to save the picture Don has the idea of using Kathy to dub for Lina. When Lina finds out about it she makes a big stink!!  How does it end?  Well Dear Readers, Hollywood does like happy endings after all.

The cast of the Granbury Theatre Company did an excellent representation of this classic movie.  The acting was very good, the singing was outstanding and the dance numbers were a big hit.  And yes, they were even able to re-create the icon scene where Don is singing and dancing in the rain!  A few patrons down front got to experience some of the rain first hand!

It was a fun production and we all thoroughly enjoyed this presentation.  For a small community theater, they were able to pull out all the stops in the casting and the costumes certainly reflected the time period of the movie, the late 20's.  The production was certainly worth the small price of the tickets and the short drive to Granbury.  We plan to return.
