"The Age of Adaline" (movie critique)

Recently, The Travelling Toe and the Friday Movie Mavens went to the local multiplex to see "The Age of Adaline".

The movie centers on Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) who is born just after the turn of the century.  She eventually meets an engineer who is working on the Golden Gate Bridge and they fall in love and get married.   They then have a beautiful baby girl.  Adaline's husband is killed in a freak accident while working on the bridge. Then in 1932, or thereabouts, Adaline still distraught over the death of her husband, is driving at night on an icy mountain road and the car slides off the road.  Adaline is thrown out of the car and submerged in water then electrocuted.   But she does not die.   From that day froward, Adaline never ages past her 29th year.

As her daughter grows up, Adaline stays looking the same.  Soon she has to make the difficult decision to leave her daughter, change her identity and start a new life.  Adaline moves from place to place using different names and different identities.  She eventually returns to San Francisco using a different name, Jenny, and working in a public library.

One scene in the movie has Jenny meeting her daughter for lunch and the daughter is played by Ellen Burstyn.

During the New Year's Eve celebration Jenny meets a handsome young man, Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman).   He is a rich philanthropist and uses a donation ploy to get Jenny to go out with him.  Ellis begins  a relentless pursuit but Jenny stalls until eventually she begins to fall in love with him too - going against her long held rule not to become seriously involved with anyone.   Well, there is one exception to that rule, her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel...one of many in her long life.

Ellis invites Jenny to meet his parents at their 30th wedding anniversary.   The parents are played by Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker.

William Jones (Ford), is struck by Jenny and say she looks just like a young girl, Adaline Bowman, that he fell in love with while on a trip in England .  Jenny tells him that Adaline Bowman is her mother, but he does not believe her.  When he finally figures it out, he confronts Adaline.  He tells her if she really loves Ellis she must tell him the truth.   But Adaline is afraid and runs away.  Once again on a dark and lonely icy mountain road another car wreck takes place.

Does Adaline survive a second wreck and if she does is her life changed?

Well dear readers, The Travelling Toe will leave the story here and not spoil the ending. You will just have to see the movie yourself to find out what happens to Adaline.  OK, one hint - a grey hair is involved.

We ladies did enjoy this movie and thought the fantasy aspect of the story was well done. Additional we would like to thank the director for having some eye candy for us female movie goers.  Hmmmmm, Ellis looks mighty fine wrapped in a towel still wet from a shower!!

The Travelling Toe gives this movie 1 big toe and 1 middle toe up with a background music track of "Sweet Adaline" sung by  a Barbershop Quartet..
