Day Trip to Forney, Texas

Map to Forney

The Travelling Toe and 2 of the Day Trip Divas journeyed east to a little town, called Forney.  The reason for our day trip was to do a little eating and a little site seeing.

Forney, Texas   City Hall

Forney is a a small city in Kaufman County.  The first settlers that arrived saw vast plains, native grasses, wild horses and buffalo.  By 1870, the settlement was called Brooklyn, Texas.  The town applied for a Post Office but was rejected as the name Brooklyn, Texas was already taken.  During this same time frame, the Texas & Pacific Railroad was looking for towns to use as railroad hubs.  The civil engineer for the project was John W. Forney.  So the town leaders changed the town's name from Brooklyn to Forney to attract the railroad.  And that did the trick!

The 2010 census shows that there are 14, 661 for the Forney  population figures.  The town is bounded by US Highway 80 on the north side and Interstate 20 on the south side.

The city symbol is the Jackrabbit, which is also the mascot of the High School.

In 1987, the Texas State Legislature named Forney as the "Antique Capital of Texas".

Antique Row Information

Because of time constraints we did not have time to visit any of the antique stores, but we did drive down College Street that has several vintage houses still being maintained and used for residences.

The Travelling Toe took the following pictures so they are not very good, but they will give you a quick view to the exterior beauty of these homes

The house above has a lovely turret and a widows walk at roof top.

The sign in the yard of this house says: Brooks Homeplace 1898.

We had an enjoyable day out and about.  May have to return to Forney again and make time for some antiquting.
