"Eddie The Eagle" (movie critque)

EDDIE THE EAGLE

Recently, The Friday Movie Mavens and The Travelling Toe journeyed to the local multiplex to see the new film "Eddie The Eagle".  Taron Egerton plays the part of Eddie.

The movie is based on the life of Michael "Eddie" Edwards, who at an early age, had aspirations of being able to compete in the Summer Olympics.  In the film, as a child Eddie had physical issues with his legs and even at one time had to wear a brace.  But it soon became apparent that Eddie was not cut out for running laps, relay races, jumping hurdles, throwing the javelin or any other sport that is part of the summer games.  When his dreams were dashed because of this lack of athletic ability, his father insisted he start working with him in the family construction business.  But Eddie would not let his dreams die and he found the answer - the Winter Olympics!  Eddie took up downhill skiing and was fairly  successful at it winning medals and trophies.  But once again his dreams were dashed as he missed placing on the British Olympic team by a small margin.  Faced with this latest defeat, Eddie's father once again told him to give up his dreams and to start a real job.  But then Eddie decides on a new winter sport - ski jumping - even though he had never done it before.  He had to talk the British Olympic Committee into letting him compete in the upcoming Olympics.  They finally gave in but set high standards just to discourage him.  But Eddie took off to train at a ski jumping school in Germany.  There he meets up with a disgruntled former American Olympian champion, played by Hugh Jackman (sigh).  Nobody can drive a snow plow like he can...well, OK since The Travelling Toe lives in Texas, the chances of ever seeing a snowplow in action are slim to none.  Anywho, back to the story.  Eddie does make it to the 1988 Calgary Olympics to compete in the ski jumping event.  He earned the nickname Eddie The Eagle due to his unique skiing form.

So, does Eddie win any type of Olympic medal?  Well, Dear Readers, there will be no spoiler alert here.
