Castiglione: Lost Genius at the Kimbell Art Museum

KIMBELL ART MUSEUM

Recently The Travelling Toe and Dear Friend saw an interesting exhibit at the Kimbell Art Museum.  The exhibit, in conjunction with the Denver Art Museum, is composed of drawings and prints on paper by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione.  The graphic works is selected from the British Royal Collection.  As noted in the exhibit publication, the exhibit would not have been possible without the generosity of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione

Giovanni was born in Genoa around 1609.  He was an Italian Baroque artist of the Genoise School. Elaborate engravings and printing making were what he is best know for during his career.  He did invent the printing technique know as mono-typing.  During his life time, he was quite infamous for his escapes and brushes with the law.

The drawings and prints in the exhibit have very fine lines.  Since most of the details of the art work is intricate, the museum provides magnifying gasses so that one can obtain a better view of this master's works.

This exhibit is free so do take the time to go see these master pieces before they leave the Kimbell.  We can enjoy them just as much as Her Majesty the Queen.
