The Travelling Toe with the Friday Movie Mavens, decided to see the movie titled "Room". The leading actress, Brie Larson, has been nominated for an Oscar for her role in this film.
Brie Lawson |
The movie is the story of a young girl and her son who are held capture in a small enclosed shed. As the story begins to be told, we see a bed, a table and chairs, one sink, a bathtub, a few kitchen items and a toilet without a lid. The only natural light that seeps into the enclosure is from a skylight. The shed is locked at all times and only the "man" knows the door code...there appears to be no escape for the 2.
As the movie progresses, we learn that the young girl, who is named Joy, was kidnapped by her captive when she was only 17 and that was 7 years ago. Her son, Jack is 5 years old. At first you do not see the "man's" face, just his back or his hiney as he takes off his pants. (am sure you can guess why) When that happens Jack has to hide in the closet. The man we learn is named Nick. He tells Joy that he has lost his job and is just barely getting by and may not be able to provide supplies for them much longer. Joy begins to be worried that Nick will leave them behind or do something to Jack. She fashions an escape plan that hinges on Jack getting out of the shed. How does she do it? Dd they both escape? Does Nick find them? Can they ever really be free?
Well, Dear Readers, The Travelling Toe will not spoil the story for you as you will just have to see the movie for yourself to get the answers to these questions.
We all agreed that it was a very good movie, a little unsettling at times and that Brie is certainly worthy of her Oscar nomination. However, we also thought that the young actor, Jacob Tremblay, who played Jack, should have been recognized as well. He was at the heart of the whole story line.
