CRUMBZZForney, Texas |
One of the reasons that The Travelling Toe and 2 of the Day Trip Divas went to Forney, recently was to dine at a local cafe, Crumbzz. The cafe was recently featured in the February issue of Texas Highways Magazine.
We found the cafe to be charming and cute. We each ordered something different and none of us were disappointed in our food choices. Our orders ranged from a ham and egg sandwich, French Onion Soup with half of a toasted cheese sandwich, to simpler fare - scrambled eggs and toast. But the main attraction is the Crumb Cake. We each had a slice and one of the Day Trip Divas (name not to be divulged) finished her entire piece. The other 2 of us took half of our piece home to enjoy later in the day. There was only one wait staff on duty besides the chef so service was a tad slow but since we were on retirement time, we were OK. But if you are in a hurry, you might want to share that information with the wait staff when you arrive.
The cafe offers 5 regular varieties plus a monthly special from which to choose for when order your slice of crumb cake.
In the magazine article, it was noted that the owner of Crumbzz, J. Stephen Sadler, was an proprietor of a busy New York bakery but moved south to get away from all the snow, slush and cold temps. Mr. Sadler thought he was through with the baking biz but through a chance encounter with a friend, he decided to start a mail order business featuring the famous crumb cake. In the article, Mr. Sadler said that the crumb cake is based on a 400 year old family recipe from Austria.
Also in the article is the story of how Mr. Sadler began a tradition of sending his crumb cakes out as "diplomacy cakes". It is a cute story and more information can be found on the link below to the magazine's web site.

Crumbzz is open all week but check their website for daily hours of operation.

Since this cafe is not that far from the DFW metroplex area, then a weekend brunch trip might just be the way to try the cake that crumbs!
