Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie TX

ELLIS COUNTY COURTHOUSE
WAXAHACHIE TX

Ellis County was created in December,1849, and named for Virginian, Richard Ellis who was part of the Texas Constitutional Convention in 1836..  Waxahachie was then named the county seat in 1850.

Cornerstone

The courthouse that is standing was built in 1896 of magnificent red sandstone with granite touches. The architect was J. Riely Gordon and was built in the Romanesque Revival style.

In the the interior of the courthouse, is a beautiful ornate staircase.

We were able to go into one of the unoccupied courtrooms to look around but due to the lighting in the room pictures were not possible. The courtroom has a large second floor balcony for additional seating.

Pink granite and gray granite were used on the pillars.  The columns are made of polished pink granite and then red sandstone is used for the top and the base.

The courthouse was recently restored at a cost about 11 millions dollars.  They were able to buy the same red sandstone for repairs from the same query that produced the stone used in the 1895 construction.

The courthouse was awarded a Texas Historical Maker and was placed on the National Resister of Historic Places.  Below are 2 historic renderings of the courthouse

The courthouse grounds are very lovely and have several very large live oak trees that provide welcome and needed shade.  A statute dedicated to Richard Ellis is also on the courthouse grounds.

This is one beautiful and inspiriting courthouse. It was built to impress and it still does!
