Tarrant County Courthouse Fort Worth Museum

Tarrant County Courthouse

While visiting the historic Tarrant County Courthouse, we discovered a tiny museum in the main lobby.  After going through security, the museum was located immediately to the left in a small room.  Even though the museum is compact it does have numerous exhibits relating to the fort that was established on this location in 1849 and was named Fort Worth.

The exhibits displayed various types of military clothing, weaponry and other items pertaining to the area when the fort was founded, as mentioned previously in 1849. It was manned by the US Second Dragoons.

SIDE NOTE:  The 2nd Dragoons were formed in 1836 and remain an active Army unit.

Fort Worth was named for General William Jenkins Worth, a hero of the Mexican War.  An interesting tidbit, if you visit New York City and go to Times Square, there is a statue dedicated in memory of General Worth.

Also on display is a interesting diorama of the working fort. In looking at it, all sorts of buildings required for a working fort to be sustainable are featured but also not forgotten, are the very necessary outhouses. There were several scattered around the fortification..

Below is a layout of the fort.

This is a picture of the types of buildings that were part of the fort.

So if you ever visit the Tarrant County Courthouse, pop in for a brief look at the history that made the fort of Fort Worth into the city of Fort Worth.  There is no admission fee.
