"Indigenous Beauty" at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art

INDIGENOUS BEAUTY
American Indian Art
From The Diker Collection

The Travelling Toe and a dear friend who also enjoys viewing Native American Indian art, took in the current exhibit at the Carter Museum of American Art.

The exhibit is part of the private Native American Art collection of Charles and Valerie Diker. They have been collecting these type of art objects for over 40 years and have amassed the largest comprehensive and superb collection in private hands.  They have over 400 objects. in their collection. This exhibit at the Carter brings together 120 exquisite pieces of art from tribes all across North America.  The Carter is only one of four museums to host this exhibit.

Native American tribes are  made up of hundreds of unique groups with different languages, mythologies and customs that have evolved over the centuries.  Native American Indian artists learned from their elders about designs and patterns symbolic of their people.

With this exhibit, the variety of times on display is dazzling and includes:

  • baskets
  • dance ornaments
  • drawings
  • ivories
  • Katsina dolls
  • masks
  • pottery
  • regalia
  • sculpture
Tribal artisans from the Bering Strait and the Northwest Coast to the Southwest and up the Eastern Woodland are represented in this showing.

If you are a viewer of the popular PBS series "Antiques Roadshow" then you might remember when a piece of Native American art has been featured on the show.   One such artist that pops up from time to time is Maria Martinez from a pueblo outside of Santa Fe who is extremely well known for her amazing pottery.  There is an example of her work in this display.  It is indeed lovely.

If you enjoy seeing and marvelling in Native American Art like The Travelling Toe and dear friend do, then you must go see this exhibit before it leaves town.   It is not to be missed.

And here is a deal folks, the Carter does NOT have an admission fee - the exhibit is FREE.   The only issue you might face would be parking right now as the Carter is in a construction phase and their parking lot is not available. But the exhibit is worth the small parking fee you might have to pay.
