However, the Old Albany Jail was converted into an art museum in 1980 by well know local entrepreneur, Reilly Nail, who had inherited the jail from his uncle. The original building has been expanded several times as the art acquisitions have grown Several galleries house their permanent collections. One gallery displays Chinese figurines, another gallery features Japanese ceramics. In the main gallery, paintings featuring the likes of Renior, Wharhol and Toulouse-Latec are on display for viewing. The museum also hosts special exhibits, so sign up for their email newsletters to be in the know of what is happening at the jail.
The staff is friendly and make strangers feel welcome. There is no admission fee to visit the museum.
